Job Description
The Director of Outreach Ministries of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, VA oversees a variety of parish ministries serving those who are marginalized, vulnerable, and disadvantaged throughout the city of Richmond and the world. With hundreds of engaged volunteers, the Director represents the needs of the larger Richmond community to the parish, and the compassion and resources of the parish back to the city.

St. Stephen’s primary focus is on the city of Richmond and several key partner ministries in Richmond’s East End, including: Fairfield Court Elementary School; the Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School; RE:Work Richmond; St. Peter’s Episcopal Church; the Peter Paul Development Center; Challenge Discovery Projects. Our extensive food ministries are supported by contributions from parishioners, and from customers and vendors at our weekly farmers market, and by our ongoing partnership with FeedMore. Some of St. Stephen’s efforts regarding racial justice have centered around partnerships with other congregations through Clergy Against Racism (CAR). Our Jail Ministry engages a number of parishioners as lay chaplains in the City Jail. In non-pandemic times, St. Stephen’s deploys hundreds of volunteers every month throughout the city, seeking deeper engagement with the disenfranchised and helping to rebuild homes and communities in need.

Our national ministries have focused on rebuilding lives in disaster areas, including hurricane-ravaged communities. We have been investigating a new relationship with Puerto Rico, which continues to need relief following Hurricane Maria. Our international ministries have focused the Dominican Republic and South Africa, where we have had important partnerships. We are now engaged in some of the poorest parts of Argentina, where we work with two full-time missionaries.

The Director will be part of collegial team of highly professional clergy and lay staff and will work closely with the Outreach Committee and its subcommittees.
