Jefferts Schori: ‘I am deeply grateful for what God has been up to in the midst of our journey together’

Posted Oct 23, 2015

[Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs press release] Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has issued the following statement in English and Spanish:

The Episcopal Church has come a long way in the last 10 years. We are no longer consumed by internal conflict over various social issues. We are clearer about who we are – a multinational church, with congregations in 17 nations, worshipping in countless different languages, thriving in international, immigrant, and multicultural contexts everywhere, and discovering the abundant life that comes in turning outward to love the neighbors nearby and far away. We are far more conscious about our vocation as partners in the mission of God to reconcile and heal the world, particularly shaped by the Five Anglican Marks of Mission. We are holding our identity as Episcopal Christians a bit more confidently, even in the midst of our diversity. We are also more willing to hold that identity lightly and gracefully in engaging other Christians and people of other religious traditions, searching for what we dream of in common – shalom, the Reign of God, a more just and peaceful world, with abundant life for all creation.

I am deeply grateful for what God has been up to in the midst of our journey together, and I look forward to seeing how this church of the middle way will continue to lead and partner as we travel the road home, into God’s fullest dream of abundant life for all. I thank the people of this Church and beyond for your prayers over the last nine years – especially in recognition that we do this work together, never alone. May God bless the next chapter of The Episcopal Church’s engagement in God’s mission, as we go together into Galilee!

The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori
Presiding Bishop and Primate
The Episcopal Church

  2. Barbara Platt-Hendren+ says:

Well done good and faithful servant. We thank you for your years of leading our church and your presence as a Christian in this world. Your sister in Christ, Barbara+

Thank you, Katharine, for leading us well as our Presiding Bishop. We are grateful to you for shepherding us through these difficult times.

  4. The Rev. Lucretia Jevne says:

And thank you for your inspiring words, your patience, your prophetic preaching and your gracious presence throughout these very difficult 9 years. My prayers go with you as you enter the next stage in your life’s journey. We are all looking forward to more inspiring books, thoughts and sermons! May you continue to bear much fruit in service of the Gospel. See you in Galilee!

  5. Dr Jeff Ezell says:

I very much appreciate the tone and content of the PB’s statement. However, I must take issue with aspects of the translation into Spanish. Just as we do not have “priestesses”, but rather priests who are both male and female, there can be no “obispa” — irrespective of gender, the proper title for one ordained to the fullness of the apostolic ministry is “obispo”, an invariant noun. Likewise in English usage we have only bishops — no “bishopesses”.

  6. Tr. Donald Heacock says:

There are no more social issues tension because more than a million members have left maybe purged is a better. The Church is no longer catholic. I suspect it is unitarian in drag.

  7. Glenna Faust Geiger says:

Thank you, Bishop Katherine, for taking the time to listen to the concerns of your flock, and for responding with wisdom and love.

  8. Don McCleary says:

Thank you Bishop Katherine for all the many things you have done for our Church.
You have shown great grace and resolve in the face of much opposition.
Our beloved Episcopal Church is a much more inclusive and welcoming place than it was before you became PB. May God bless you in your retirement. (But I suspect you will continue to have a voice and a place in our Church for years to come)

  9. Judith Wood says:

Nine years of challenge and success.

  10. Laurie Eiserloh says:

Thank you Bishop Katherine. Your leadership and your witness are an inspiration to us all.

  11. Brian Cannaday+ says:

“We are no longer consumed by internal conflict over various social issues.”

This statement clarifies for me just how out of touch she is, has been, and continues to be. While many have been beaten into submission or left the church, the internal conflict is far from over. General Convention may have spoken, but those few “decision makers” are just as out of touch as the PB and in no way reflect the mind of the wider church as a whole in any theological or moral way.

Anyone who still refers to the Episcopal Church as the middle way is intellectually dishonest and lacks any true understanding of the definition of middle. This “middle” now resides (and has for quite some time) far left of center in every way imaginable (theologically, socially, politically, ideologically).

    1. Bruce Marshall says:

So, TEC “now resides (and has for quite some time) far left of center in every way imaginable (theologically, socially, politically, ideologically).” That seems about right; and it is also a pretty accurate description of Jesus’ ministry as well, don’t you think? That’s why the great majority of American Episcopalians support its ministries throughout the world no matter what some other provinces may say about us.

  12. Well done! Bishop Katherine, thank you so much for your excellent leadership. Trust the rest of your life and ministry will be as fruitful as they have always been. Life is not finding ourselves, but creating ourselves in the choices we make, a new life in Christ. Life is full of trade-offs, perhaps there is more exciting, awaits you and the Church whom you have called to serve.

  13. r h lewis (VTS 1963) says:

It is of interest that much of what TEC has done over recent years is very much like what we are
hearing from the Bishop of Rome in the past 2/3 years. Could it be that there is a return to the
Good News/Gospel ? Could it be that we are willing to build “for the Kingdom” and not presume
to think & behave as tho’ the Kingdom is what we will build by ourselves. Care for the least, seek the lost, and help heal the wounded. Sounds like the Jesus agenda to me !!

  14. Veronica Hinkson says:

Well done good and faithful servant. Thank you for your quiet but decisive leadership over the past nine years. We are Christ’s church universal preaching Christ’s Gospel of salvation and reconciliation.

Luke 10:27 – He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'”

Romans 3:23-24 New International Version (NIV) – “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”
